New York City is one of the largest cities in the United States, hence the name, the Big Apple! The city has a great atmosphere with great food, lots of food varieties actually, easily accessible all over, with the country’s best Pizza spots being in the City. The city also has an assortment of diverse brunch spots. New York stands out as one of the most buzzing entertainment areas in the country, with countless concerts and hundreds of cinemas showing a wide variety of shows, day in and day out. The best entertainment stage is also in New York; yes, we’re talking about Broadway.

To enjoy these factors, one needs to be able to get around quickly. Considering the millions living within the city, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s complicated. Most people in New York don’t use cars, and you will not need one to move around if you live there. This is because New York is the most transit-friendly city in the United States.

The City’s extensive railway system, well-oiled clock, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, especially in the City’s neighborhoods, are the major factors leading to the City’s position on the list. It has expanded its infrastructure to the outer boroughs to make the City transit-friendly and more walkable. The most walkable neighborhoods include Boerum Hill, Fordham Heights, Elmhurst, and St George.

The Best Places to Live in New York

St George

This neighborhood is beautiful and serene, with a view of the water and the three elements: the walk, cycle, and transit scores. The bike score measures how the cycling system is in a neighborhood. The walk score looks at the infrastructure for taking strolls and jogging. Lastly, the transit score measures the capability and efficiency of the public transport system.

St Georges ranks lowest in most elements, but its scores are pretty good. St Gorge’s neighborhood has a very low bike score, scoring a flimsy 47. This is the weakest among all the neighborhoods on the list. The neighborhood achieves a walk score of 84 and a transit score of 74. The transit score is relatively high due to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. The terminal connects the residents to all the other parts of New York City. The transit system is efficient and reliable hence the high score. The borough is introducing a dockless bike-share program to raise their cycle score. If this goes into effect, the score will most likely rise soon.

Elmhurst

Queens has always been a diverse borough. Movies like ‘Coming to America’ have reinforced the idea of Queens’ diversity. Among all the neighborhoods in Queens, Elmhurst is the most ethnically diverse neighborhood. It is also the most walkable, and you would enjoy walking in Elmhurst as it will expose you to a cocktail of diverse cultures and dozens of culturally unique dishes. In the neighborhood, a car is cumbersome as most of the errands can be run on foot. This is why the neighborhood scores an astronomic 95 on the walk score. Walking might not be your thing, but a car is still not a must-have, as the transit score is 97. The rail network and the bus service are excellent. The infrastructure is top-tier, with M and R trains servicing most of the routes in the neighborhood. The neighborhood has several subways, and navigating the city by rail or bus is relatively easy and reliable.

The downside is the neighborhood’s score of just 74 on the bike score. The cycling infrastructure is not up to standard. Attention has to be paid to the cycle tracks and the general cycling environment to improve the bike score. The neighborhood is still very walkable, ranking 62 in New York. The Elmhurst railway network is the brightest star in this constellation. With better cycling infrastructure, Elmhurst can easily rank highest on the walkable list.

Boerum Hill

One of Brooklyn’s most famous areas is Boerum Hill, a small neighborhood with about 23 000 residents. Boerum Hill is the most walkable neighborhood in King’s County. Boerum scored 98 on walkability. The neighborhood is tight-knit and perfect if we are talking about being walkable. On average, a person is only 5 minutes away from over 25 bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. The neighborhood is also one of the most cyclist-friendly neighborhoods, scoring a whopping 95 on the bike score. It is dotted with numerous City bike stations. Every north-south street has a bike lane, so imagine the connectivity this offers to bikers!

Boerum is, in simple terms, a biker’s haven, and if the infrastructure is maintained, it will remain that way for years to come. The Boerum public transport system is flawless. The neighborhood scores 100 on the transit score. The rail network is extensive and reliable. Boerum residents have access to over five trains. The trains, coupled with dozens of buses in the system, give you one of the best transport systems in the United States.

Fordham Heights

Fordham Heights is located in the city’s heart and ranks high in ‘walkability’ considerations. Surprised? Yes, the Bronx also ranks high on the walkable neighborhood’s list. The neighborhood has a pretty impressive 97 for its walk score. The transit score is also surprising; Fordham Heights scored 99. The rail and road network is efficient, serving 50 000 residents. The bike score, however, is quite disappointing. Fordham Heights has a bike score of only 62.

In general, New York City is easily the nation’s most walkable capital, and if that is what you are looking for, then each of these neighborhoods will award you leisure, with Boerum Hill leading the pack, of course! Enjoy your stroll!
